Ultrasound

Abdomen

Ultrasound of the abdomen is useful for evaluation of the liver, gallbladder, biliary ducts, pancreas, spleen and kidneys. It can also be used to assess for the presence of abnormal fluid or lymph nodes in the abdomen as well as to evaluate the abdominal aorta and its branches for aneurysms and blockages. Vascular or Doppler ultrasound is also used as an adjunct to obtain more information about the solid organs and the blood vessels. Because ultrasound provides real time images, it can also be used to guide needle biopsies of the abdominal organs, in which a thin needle is used to sample cells from an abnormal area for laboratory testing.

Abdominal Ultrasound is most often used to evaluate:

  • Gallstones
  • Jaundice
  • Enlargement of the Liver
  • Fat deposition in the liver
  • Liver Tumors
  • Pancreatic Masses
  • Enlargement of the Spleen
  • Kidney Stones
  • Kidney Obstruction
  • Kidney Masses
  • Ascites
  • Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm
