Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
What is MR Breast Biopsy?
Very often breast MRI may reveal abnormalities which are not obvious on mammography and ultrasound. In this instance, MR guided biopsy of the lesion is often performed. In this procedure, another contrast enhanced breast MRI is performed to confirm that the abnormality is still present and to determine the exact location of lesion. The skin is cleansed and anesthetized and a special MR compatible biopsy device is guided into the lesion. The correct position of the needle is confirmed with another short MRI scan. The abnormal tissue is then aspirated with a vacuum assisted biopsy device and sent for laboratory analysis. An MR compatible metallic clip is then inserted to mark the biopsy site, if further surgical excision should be required. The position of the clip is confirmed with another short MRI scan. The biopsy site is then compressed and a sterile dressing applied. After a short period of observation, the patient is sent home with a sports bra for support. Patients are instructed to avoid strenuous activity for 24 hours after returning home, but will usually be able to resume their normal activities.
